Bulimia
What is Bulimia Nervosa?
Bulimia Nervosa is a psychiatric illness characterised by obsessive binge eating followed by compensatory behaviour such as vomiting, using laxatives or over-exercising. This often occurs several times a day for extended periods.
Bulimia sufferers become trapped in a devastating cycle of binging and purging. Fearing weight gain bulimia sufferers place themselves on strict diets, omitting lots of foods and nutrients needed by the body to maintain health, this results in cravings and an overriding urge to eat.

Once the person begins to eat they can often feel a lack of control and can binge until they feel ill. Which leads to feelings of guilt, shame and disgust during this time sufferers will compensate for binging by purging, over-exercising or abusing laxatives or diuretics to avoid gaining weight. Again this will trigger a strict diet and the cycle will repeat.
