What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that usually lines the uterus is found outside the uterine cavity. This tissue can be found in the ovaries, the tissue lining the pelvis, the bowel, bladder or cervix. During the menstrual cycle, this tissue responds to hormones like the tissue lining the uterus becoming thickened and swelling with blood. The blood from this misplaced tissue cannot drain from the body during a period so bleeds onto the surface of nearby organs. This can cause irritation which can lead to inflammation, scarring and adhesions.

Endometriosis symptoms

Symptoms of endometriosis can vary from mild to quite severe and include:

  • painful periods
  • pelvic pain
  • pain during ovulation
  • painful sex
  • lower back and thigh pain
  • lethargy
  • nausea
  • PMS
  • fertility issues

What causes endometriosis?

The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown. Theories suggest that a woman's immune system and genetics can have a bearing on the development of the condition. Factors which are thought to increase the risk of endometriosis are:
