[00:00] Today we're going to talk about headaches. Now, with headaches, there's a couple of common presentations which would be very treatable at a health clinic with the use of chiropractic care, massage, and/or acupuncture.

[00:15] And those types of headaches are tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches. The main presentation that they come with is typically related to postural tension, which we're seeing a lot of these days with people doing a lot of desk work and a lot of computer work.

[00:35] What it results in is an increase in muscle tension around the upper back and neck area, and that can cause some inflammation in the joints and can cause some pain radiating from the muscles.

[00:50] You might get some pain at the back of your head at the top of the neck, some compression or tight feeling around the head, some temporal pain, and sometimes some high pressure or some forehead pain as well.

[01:05] Often you'll find yourself in a cycle of having to take pain medication regularly without it being very effective for the cause. And that's why the first thing you want to do is come and see a registered practitioner.

[01:20] We have an AHPRA-registered acupuncturist, an AHPRA-registered chiropractor, and/or a remedial massage therapist. They can assess those joints and those muscles in the upper part of your body to see if they are pain-producing and if, in actual fact, they're causing the headache.

[01:40] Treatment can consist of some massage work and trigger point work. The chiropractor would use some gentle adjusting on the facet joints—on the joints of the neck—to get that movement back, and the acupuncturist would use acupuncture to release muscular tension and to reduce inflammation.

[02:00] In doing so, what it does is it helps to alleviate the muscular tension around those areas and it can help to alleviate the headache.

[02:10] Something like the Health and Healing Wellness Centre for that treatment is ideal because we have all three practitioners on site. So you could present to any one of those three practitioners and they could assess you and work out the best course of treatment from there.

[02:25] Normally with that tension and cervicogenic headache, it does respond very quickly and very well to this kind of treatment. Thank you.

There are different types of headaches and their causes and treatments can vary, from mild tension headaches to more severe migraine headaches or to paralysing cluster headaches. A range of causes of the common headaches includes tension headaches, dental and neck pain headaches, sinus headaches, vision and dietary problems. Other known causes of headaches and migraines can include substances, illness, injuries or body systems not functioning normally. A large proportion of people may experience a headache that has more than one cause.

If you are experiencing discomfort from headaches call to book an appointment with one of our natural health team. At Health and Healing Wellness Centre, our health professionals can review your headache system and headache causes to develop a personalised treatment plan. A combined approach may involve chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal and mineral supplements, and other natural remedies which can simultaneously address any or all factors depending on the nature of a headache.

Types of headaches

  • Common headache is generally referred to as tension headaches or Myofascial referred pain headaches. Research indicates that approximately 75% of the population (US & UK) experience at least one or more in any year.
  • Cluster headaches persist for minutes to hours each episode and return (cluster) for weeks or months. Pain is intense and searing and can cause patients to become breathless. Usually, they affect only one side of the head and are described as feeling like a "hot poker" being driven through the eye. Eye redness, tearing and nasal drainage can often accompany the pain. Cluster headaches afflict approximately 1% of the population and are six times more prevalent in males than in females. They are especially prevalent in people who consume alcohol or who smoke tobacco.
  • Exertional headaches occur as a result of strenuous exercise and involve severe pain around the back of the head. They usually subside within a few minutes. Exertional headaches afflict 10% of Headache sufferers and are more prevalent in males than in females;
  • Infection headaches occur as a result of infection - sinusitis is the most common trigger. Can also be caused by allergies, the common cold, influenza or meningitis;
  • Migraines are complex neurological events characterized by moderate to severe throbbing or pulsing pain, which typically affects one side of the head. Attacks persist for 4 to 72 hours and are frequently accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light, sound, or smell.
  • Rebound headaches occur as a result of over-use of Analgesics by Headache patients. Typical symptoms of rebound headaches include the return of an individual's headache 3 - 4 hours after the effects of Analgesic medications wear off and headaches that occur daily or almost daily and last from six hours to a full day. Sometimes rebound headaches occur every other day or even every third day.
  • Tension headaches begin as a dull ache or squeezing type of pain in the back of the head and that spreads to the crown of the head and the forehead. They are characterised by a feeling of pressure. Tension headaches account for 80% of all headaches.
  • Cervicogenic headaches originate from structural problems in the upper cervical spine, such as issues with the neck joints, discs, or nerves, but the pain is referred to the head. Usually affecting only one side, the pain starts at the base of the skull or neck and shoots forward toward the forehead, temple, or behind the eye. They are often triggered or worsened by specific neck movements, sustained awkward postures, or pressure applied to the back of the neck, and are frequently accompanied by reduced neck mobility or stiffness.
