PMS - Premenstrual syndrome

PMS is a combination of symptoms women can experience in the week or so preceding their period which usually clear once menstruation begins. These symptoms can be both physical and mental/emotional.

PMS symptoms

Symptoms of PMS vary greatly from woman to woman but can include:

  • acne
  • bloating
  • depression, anxiety, concentration issues, mood swings
  • headaches or a migraine
  • oedema - fluid retention
  • digestive issues - diarrhoea or constipation
  • food cravings or increased appetite
  • sleep pattern changes
  • fatigue

Menorrhagia - heavy periods

Menorrhagia is the term for abnormally heavy periods or prolonged bleeding.

Symptoms of menorrhagia can include:

  • a period which lasts longer than seven days
  • blood flow which necessitates changing pads or tampons once an hour or more.
  • large blood clots
  • anaemia - experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath or a feeling of weakness

Period pain or period cramps

Period pain or dysmenorrhoea is thought to be a result of the uterus muscles working hard contracting to dislodge the thickened lining at the beginning of menstruation. Often pain is felt in the abdomen, lower back and legs. The severity of pain experienced can vary significantly from woman to woman.
